Zinc Oxide Introduction
Zinc oxide (ZnO), commonly known as zinc white, is an oxide of zinc. It is insoluble in water but soluble in acid and strong alkali. At high temperatures it appears yellow, turning white after cooling, and sublimates at 1800°C. The zinc oxide lattice is of ZnS type, with oxygen in the tetrahedron formed by zinc, and zinc in the tetrahedron of oxygen, with a coordination number of 4. As a strong ultraviolet absorber, it is widely used in industry as a reinforcing agent for rubber products, white pigment, plastic filler, paint colorant, and as the main component of emollients, ointments, and zinc pastes.

Production Methods Comparison
Zinc oxide production can be divided into three types according to its production method: indirect zinc oxide, direct zinc oxide, and active zinc oxide.
  • Direct zinc oxide is mostly made from zinc ore, zinc ash, and zinc concentrate. It is oxidized and roasted at high temperature then reduced to zinc vapor by coal. The vapor is oxidized with hot air to obtain zinc oxide. This process yields product purity between 75-95% with higher impurity content.
  • Indirect zinc oxide uses metal zinc ingot or zinc slag as raw material. Zinc is converted to vapor at 1000°C in a graphite crucible, then oxidized by air to produce zinc oxide particles collected after cooling. This method produces particles between 0.1-10 microns with purity of 99.5-99.7%.
