Characteristics

  • High Purity: Manufactured via the indirect (French) process, with ZnO content of 99.5%–99.7%.
  • Fine & Uniform Particles: Delivers good dispersibility and consistent reaction rates.
  • Low Impurities: Heavy metals including Pb, Cd, As and Fe are strictly controlled.
  • Chemical Stability: Remains stable under ambient temperature and pressure; insoluble in water and alcohol.
  • Superior UV Protection: Efficiently absorbs and reflects UVA and UVB rays.
  • Antibacterial & Deodorizing: Possesses natural antibacterial, antifungal and deodorizing features.
  • Good Thermal Conductivity: Ideal for thick rubber components that require heat dissipation.
  • Multiple Grades Available: Rubber, coating, ceramic, cosmetic, personal care, feed, electronic and activated grades.

Advantages

  • High Purity & Low Impurities: Improves product stability and reduces side effects in final products.
  • Excellent Vulcanization Activity: Acts as a vulcanization activator in rubber, increasing crosslink density and making vulcanization more complete.
  • Improves Rubber Adhesion: Enhances adhesion between rubber and steel wire, cord fabric, and other reinforcing materials.
  • Good Dynamic Mechanical Properties: Low deformation, low heat build-up, good wear resistance, and excellent aging resistance.
  • Wide Application Range: Meets or exceeds GB/T 3185-2016 and is widely used in rubber, ceramics, glass, personal care raw materials, electronics, feed, and chemical intermediates.
  • Activated Grade Available: High specific surface area (~100 m²/g) for higher activation efficiency and reduced dosage.
  • Surface Treatment Available: Silicone or silane treatment can be provided to improve dispersion in organic or aqueous systems.
  • Stable Supply & Fast Delivery: Regular production capacity and multiple loading ports ensure reliable delivery.

Applications

  • Rubber Industry (50–60% consumption): Acts as a vulcanization activator in tire manufacturing. It enhances wear resistance, thermal conductivity, anti-aging performance and adhesion to steel wires and cord fabrics, while increasing the strength and surface gloss of latex goods.
  • Coatings & Paints: Serves as a white pigment with strong hiding power and tinting strength. It offers UV and IR shielding, anti-mildew properties, long service life and outstanding weather resistance.
  • Ceramics & Glass: Functions as a glaze flux to improve elasticity and gloss. Nano zinc oxide reduces the sintering temperature by 40–60°C and imparts antibacterial features. It is widely applied in optical glass and special glass products.
  • Cosmetics & Personal Care: A broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen covering both UVA and UVB. It is formulated in skincare products, diaper rash ointments and acne treatments, and is friendly to sensitive skin.
  • Personal Care & Skin Raw Materials: A skin-protective ingredient for ointments and topical skincare preparations. High-purity cosmetic and skincare grades are available.
  • Feed & Animal Nutrition: Trace zinc additive to support animal health and growth.
  • Electronics & Other Fields: Used in ferrites, varistors, phosphors and electronic components, as well as a chemical intermediate for synthesizing zinc compounds.

Technology

  • Indirect / French Process: Zinc metal is vaporized at about 1000°C and oxidized with hot air to produce high-purity ZnO (99.5%–99.7%).
  • Direct / American Process: Zinc ore is reduced and vaporized at 1000–1200°C, then oxidized and cooled to collect ZnO.
  • Wet Process: Zinc salt solution reacts with alkali to form basic zinc carbonate or zinc hydroxide, followed by filtration, drying, and calcination to produce activated zinc oxide.
  • Nano Technology: Controlled synthesis produces nano ZnO (30–200 nm) with high surface area and high activity.
  • Surface Treatment: Silicone or silane coating improves dispersion and compatibility in organic or aqueous systems.
  • Quality Control: ICP-AES for heavy metals, BET for surface area, and strict in-process inspection ensure batch-to-batch consistency.

Theory

  • Rubber Vulcanization Activation: ZnO reacts with stearic acid to produce zinc stearate. Zinc stearate further reacts with accelerators to form active zinc‑accelerator complexes, lowering activation energy and speeding up vulcanization.
  • UV Protection: As a wide‑bandgap semiconductor (~3.37 eV), ZnO absorbs UV radiation and converts it into low-level heat. It also reflects and scatters UV rays simultaneously.
  • Antibacterial Action: Upon light exposure, nano ZnO generates electron‑hole pairs and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which destroy bacterial cell membranes.
  • Ceramic Fluxing: ZnO reacts with other glaze constituents to form low‑melting eutectics, decreasing sintering temperature and enhancing glaze gloss and elasticity.

Production Process

  • Indirect / French Process  Zinc ingot or zinc dross → crushing → smelting at around 1000°C to generate zinc vapor → oxidation by hot air → cooling → ZnO powder collection. Purity: 99.5%–99.7%. Primary applications: Rubber, cosmetics, personal care and high-end scenarios.
  • Direct / American Process   Zinc ore → purification into zinc ash → blending with coal and lime → furnace reduction at 1000–1200°C → zinc vapor → oxidation and cooling → ZnO collection. Purity: Typically less than 99.7%. Primary applications: Industrial grade, ceramics and coatings.
  • Wet Process   Zinc feedstock + ammonia / sulfuric acid → zinc complex or zinc sulfate → purification → precipitation of basic zinc carbonate or zinc hydroxide → filtration, washing, drying and calcination → activated ZnO. Primary applications: Activated zinc oxide, rubber, animal feed and agriculture.

Operation Method

  • Rubber: Add ZnO during mixing or milling with stearic acid and accelerators. Typical dosage: 3–5 phr. Activated ZnO may reduce dosage.
  • Coatings / Inks: Slowly add ZnO powder into the base material under stirring. Use dispersing agents if needed. Typical dosage: 5–15% by weight.

  • Cosmetics: Disperse in oil or water phase before adding to the formula. For nano ZnO, prepare a pre-dispersion slurry first. Typical dosage: 2–20% depending on SPF and product type.

  • Ceramics: Mix and grind with other glaze components. Typical dosage: 2–10% in glaze formulations.

  • Feed: Introduce through trace mineral premix according to local nutritional standards.

  • General Handling: Avoid dust generation; keep area well ventilated. Wash hands thoroughly after use.
