Advantages

  • High Purity & Low Impurities: Enhances the stability of end products and minimizes unwanted side effects.
  • Excellent Vulcanization Activity: Serves as a vulcanization activator in rubber formulations, raising crosslink density and achieving more thorough vulcanization.
  • Improved Rubber Adhesion: Boosts bonding strength between rubber and reinforcing substrates including steel wires and cord fabrics.
  • Superior Dynamic Mechanical Performance: Features low deformation, low heat build-up, outstanding abrasion resistance and excellent anti-aging properties.
  • Wide Application Scope: Complies with GB/T 3185-2016 standard and exceeds its requirements. Widely applied in rubber, ceramics, glass, personal care raw materials, electronics, animal feed and chemical intermediates.
  • Activated Grade Option: High specific surface area (~100 m²/g) delivers higher activation efficiency and lowers required dosage.
  • Custom Surface Treatment: Silicone or silane surface treatment is available to improve dispersion within organic or aqueous systems.
  • Stable Supply & Prompt Delivery: Consistent production capacity and multiple loading ports guarantee dependable shipment.

Applications

  • Rubber Industry (50–60%): Vulcanization activator for tires; improves wear resistance, heat conduction, aging resistance, and adhesion to steel wire/cord fabric; boosts strength and gloss in latex products.
  • Coatings & Paints: White pigment for hiding power and tinting strength; provides UV/IR shielding, anti-mildew, durability, and weather resistance.
  • Ceramics & Glass: Glaze flux for better elasticity and gloss; nano ZnO lowers sintering temperature by 40–60°C and gives antibacterial function; used in optical and special glass.
  • Cosmetics & Personal Care: Broad-spectrum UV-A/UV-B mineral sunscreen; used in skincare, diaper rash creams, and acne products; suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Personal Care & Skin Raw Materials: Skin protective ingredient for ointment & external skincare formulations; high purity cosmetic & skin care grade available.
  • Feed & Animal Nutrition: Zinc trace mineral additive supporting animal health and growth.
  • Electronics & Others: Used in ferrite, varistors, phosphors, electronic components, and as a chemical intermediate for zinc compounds.

Technology

  • Indirect / French Process: Metallic zinc is vaporized at approximately 1000°C and oxidized by hot air to yield high-purity ZnO (99.5%–99.7%).
  • Direct / American Process: Zinc ore is reduced and vaporized at 1000–1200°C, followed by oxidation and cooling to recover ZnO powder.
  • Wet Process: Zinc salt solution reacts with alkali to precipitate basic zinc carbonate or zinc hydroxide. Subsequent filtration, drying and calcination produce activated zinc oxide.
  • Nano Technology: Controlled synthesis generates nano ZnO (30–200 nm) featuring high specific surface area and superior activity.
  • Surface Treatment: Silicone or silane coating enhances dispersion and compatibility within organic or aqueous systems.
  • Quality Control: ICP-AES is used for heavy metal testing and BET for surface area measurement. Rigorous in-line inspections guarantee consistent quality across batches.

Theory

  • Rubber Vulcanization Activation: ZnO reacts with stearic acid to form zinc stearate, which then reacts with accelerators to form active zinc-accelerator complexes, reducing activation energy and accelerating vulcanization.
  • UV Protection: ZnO is a wide-bandgap semiconductor (approx. 3.37 eV) that absorbs UV radiation and converts it into a small amount of heat, while also reflecting and scattering UV rays.
  • Photocatalytic Activity: Under light, nano-ZnO generates electron-hole pairs and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can break down organic matter and affect microbial cells.
  • Ceramic Fluxing: ZnO reacts with other glaze components to form low-melting eutectics, reducing sintering temperature and improving glaze gloss and elasticity.

Production Process

  • Indirect / French Process
Zinc ingot / zinc dross → crushing → smelting at approximately 1,000°C to generate zinc vapor → oxidation with hot air → cooling → collection of ZnO powder.
    Purity: 99.5%–99.7%.
Main Applications: Rubber, cosmetics, personal care, and other high-end applications.
  • Direct / American Process
Zinc ore → purification to zinc ash → mixing with coal and lime → reduction in a furnace at 1,000–1,200°C → zinc vapor → oxidation and cooling → collection of ZnO.
    Purity: Generally below 99.7%.
Main Applications: Industrial grade, ceramics, and coatings.
  • Wet Process
Zinc raw material + ammonia / sulfuric acid → zinc complex or zinc sulfate → purification → precipitation of basic zinc carbonate / zinc hydroxide → filtration, washing, drying, calcination → activated ZnO.
Main Applications: Activated zinc oxide, rubber, feed, and agriculture.

Operation Method

  • Rubber: Add ZnO in the mixing or milling stage together with stearic acid and accelerators.
  • Typical dosage: 3–5 phr. Activated ZnO can lower the required addition rate.
  • Coatings / Inks: Slowly introduce ZnO powder into base materials under agitation. Dispersants may be applied as required. Typical dosage: 5–15 wt%.
  • Cosmetics: Disperse ZnO in oil or aqueous phase prior to incorporation into formulations. For nano-ZnO, prepare a pre-dispersed slurry first. Typical dosage: 2–20%, subject to SPF target and product category.
  • Ceramics: Blend and mill with other glaze ingredients. Typical dosage in glaze systems: 2–10%.
  • Feed: Dosed via trace mineral premixes in compliance with local nutritional regulations.
  • General Handling: Avoid dust formation and maintain adequate ventilation in work zones. Thoroughly wash hands after handling.
